Repair Bad Sector Using CHKDSK Command

CHKDSK stands for Check Disk is a Windows inbuilt utility to check the hard drive for errors and fix them permanently. This is the first and effective way to remove bad sectors from the hard disk and repair the corrupt files.

Step 1. Press Windows key and type CMD in the search box.

Step 2. Click on ‘Run as Administrator’ from the options in the right-hand side window.

Step 3. Command prompt window will open to enter the command. By default, the cursor is on C: Drive where your operating system is stored.

Step 4. Type the following command to run check disk and fix the bad sectors on the hard drive. Type chkdsk C: /f /r /x and hit enter. /f parameter is to fix any found bad sectors, /r is to locate and recover readable information from the sectors, and /x is to force the drive to dismount before initiating the process.

“Please Note: It is not recommended to interrupt the CHKDSK process as it may result in even worse situations. CHKDSK process can only work on the local disk and not on the network drive. There shouldn’t be any open file or running process while running CHKDSK command. It is recommended to run CHKDSK command on a regular basis on all the partitions to keep on checking the disk partition errors.”

Use Disk Check Feature in GUI Mode

Step 1. Open Windows Explorer and click on the drive you want to scan.

Step 2. Right-click on the drive and click on ‘Properties’ at the end of the menu.

Step 3. A new window will open with the properties of the selected drive.

Step 4. Click on the ‘Tools’ tab on the top of the window.

Step 5. Under the ‘Error Checking’ section, click on the ‘Check’ button to check and remove bad sectors from hard disk.

Step 6. It will perform a check on the selected hard drive partition and remove bad sectors from the hard drive. It should restart if there are any severe changes or you must restart the system for changes to take in place.

While you are comfortable with the command prompt now, you can also make use of one more command to run a scan for corrupt system files and repair them right with a single command.

SFC /SCANNOW is a system file checker tool to check and repair corrupt system files. This command doesn’t require any parameters and can directly scan the hard drive for errors and remove bad sectors. You simply need to enter the command prompt with administrator rights and type in sfc /scannow and hit enter.
